We launched our first humanitarian aid programme in Iraq in 2003 in response to the crisis caused by the war in the country. In 2016, we opened our local office in Erbil with the objective to support returning families and internally displaced persons through humanitarian and development programmes.
In the past years, we have offered breakout opportunities through a number of large-scale and long-term programmes to those who were in a difficult situation as a result of the war.
We carry out our activities in Iraq under the supervision of our Hungarian head office, through the Erbil-based humanitarian local office, in cooperation with Hungarian staff seconded to the field, as well as with local staff, experts and local partners.

Since 2014, we have been helping families in Iraq to return after the war, and we are paying special attention to persecuted Christians.
In recent years, we have provided significant humanitarian aid to those affected by the war, and have implemented development projects: we have supported the returnees on the Nineveh Plain by reconstructing the water network and rebuilding and equipping houses and schools.
One of our most significant development programme in Iraq was launched in 2018: in the framework of a two-year programme funded by the European Union, we provided support for families to stay in place after the war. The focus is on creating jobs and strengthening host communities. The programme provides a direct outreach to 7,800 beneficiaries.
The second phase of the previous programme will be implemented in 2019 and 2020. Its aim is to improve the living conditions of Syrian refugees, Iraqi internally displaced persons and vulnerable communities that host them in Iraq as a result of the protracted Syrian and Iraqi crises, primarily through the creation of livelihoods and capacity building for civil society actors.
In response to the coronavirus emergency, we provided assistance to two epidemic hospitals by donating medical aids through our Erbil-based office.
